Nancy Pelosi and President Tsai Ing-wen meet, military on high alert in Taiwan
US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said during her visit to Taiwan that "the United States will never leave Taiwan alone."
Nancy Pelosi was speaking at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan after meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen. Nancy Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late Tuesday after Taiwan said Chinese planes had entered its air defense detection area.
Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan was heavily criticized by China and threatened with dire consequences.
Significantly, China considers Taiwan as its part, while Taiwan considers itself an independent state.
'Taiwan will not back down'
In her speech after a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen spoke about how Taiwan is increasing its defense capability. He added that "Taiwan will act as a defense line for democracy in the region."
The President of Taiwan said in his address that the issue of security around Taiwan is attracting the attention of the world due to Russia's attack on Ukraine.
"Any aggression against Taiwan will have a huge impact on the entire Indo-Pacific region," he said.
"Taiwan will not back down," he said. We will defend our national sovereignty and continue to play a role in global security.
In response to her address, Nancy Pelosi said that the United States and Taiwan have a strong partnership based on shared values, and we want to make it clear that we will not back down from our commitments to Taiwan.
He said that both Democrats and Republicans in America are united on the issue of supporting Taiwan.
Earlier on Wednesday morning, in her address to Taiwan's parliament, Nancy Pelosi said that Taiwan is "one of the most free societies in the world."
She said she wanted to increase parliamentary exchanges between the US and Taiwan.
